Out and About

Alnwick District is situated in the Heart Of Northumberland with Alnwick Castle taking pride of place in the town of Alnwick.

The town dates back to approximately AD 600, and over the centuries has thrived as an agricultural centre; as the location of Alnwick Castle and home of what were in mediaeval times the most powerful northern barons, the Earls of Northumberland.

Things to do in the area

Alnwick Garden is more than a garden, it is a registered charity that places people at its heart, whether they be individuals or part of a community. As well as standing for contemporary gardening excellence, The Garden stimulates change through play, learning, the arts, healthy activity, addressing disability and the economic renaissance of a rural community.

Seahouses and take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, famous for its bird sanctuaries and seal colony, or watch the trawlers return with their daily catch.

Bamburgh, protected by its own majestic fortress and where Holy Island can be seen on the horizon. This heritage coastline is renowned for its wide expanse of golden and often empty beaches; idyllic for those who yearn to wander barefoot in the sand and listen to the waves crash against the shore....

Holy Island of Lindisfarne The Holy Island of Lindisfarne: In 635AD Saint Aidan came from Iona and chose to found his monastery on Lindisfarne. The Christian message flourished here and spread throughout the world. However Holy Island is not only a centre of pilgrimage. Its tranquility, spirituality and scenic beauty attracts a multitude of visitors to its shores every year. Undoubtedly, it is the jewel in the crown of Northumbria.
